Who are the United Daughters of the Confederacy?

We are members of the oldest Southern heritage and patriotic organization in the United States.

We are made up of female (no less than 16 yrs. old) descendants - who are lineal (direct) and collateral - of Soldiers, Sailors and Statesmen of the Confederate States of America (1861 – 1865).

We were originally formed by incorporating several Southern women’s service organizations that were providing aid Confederate Soldiers and their families. Officially founded in 1864 by Mrs. Caroline Meriwether Goodlett of Tennessee and Mrs. Anna Davenport Raines of Georgia.

Today the UDC (hqudc.org) “objectives” encompass much more. . . .

Our Five Main Objectives;

HISTORICAL: Our chapters strive to preserve history, especially the period of our Southern History relating from 1855 to the present.

EDUCATIONAL: Each year awards and scholarships are presented to deserving students.

BENEVOLENT: We continue to provide aid to our Real Daughters and Real Granddaughters in need. We provide support and monetary aid to areas across the U.S. after natural disasters.

PATRIOTIC: We are the only organization ever given permission by the U.S. Government to present our Crosses of Military Service and Armed Forces awards to United States Military Veterans and Active Duty Servicemen and Women. Since the Spanish-American War we have continued to provide aid to U.S. troops both overseas and stateside. We are patriotic in our respect for the American and Confederate Flags and in our genuine love for our nation. Since it’s founding, the UDC has continued to provide aid to U.S. troops and citizens alike, during times of war and in National emergencies.

MEMORIAL: We mark and maintain graves and monuments of our ancestors who fought gallantly in the War Between the States.
